How to Choose a Startup Accelerator

How to Choose a Startup Accelerator

This is an article from our founder Hiroyuki ANNO to share his experience as a startup founder.

How to Choose a Startup Accelerator

There are said to be over 50 accelerators in Tokyo and more than 70 in Singapore.

From my experience, I believe accelerators can be broadly divided into the following two categories:

  1. Bootcamp-Type: Programs that focus on rigorous training to develop skills and knowledge.
  2. Business Matching-Type: Programs aimed at creating connections with large companies and investors.

Bootcamp-Type

For this type of accelerator, participating in one high-quality program is usually enough.
Example: Founder Institute
I graduated from the Founder Institute, and it was a highly practical and challenging program.

As for other well-known accelerators like Y Combinator, Techstars, 500 Global, and Alchemist, I haven’t participated in them myself, so I can’t comment in detail, but I believe they fall into the same Bootcamp-Type category.

Business Matching-Type

This type focuses on expanding networks with companies and investors.
Examples: Mitsui’s Moon Creative Lab and Yamaguchi Prefecture’s Mirise
I participated in these programs to discover new partnerships and clients.

Plug & Play is a great example of an accelerator specializing in business matching with large corporations.

Key Criteria for Choosing an Accelerator

When selecting an accelerator, I consider the following factors:

  • The organizer’s purpose and mission
  • The track record of successful alumni (e.g., YC is widely known for its many success stories)
  • The language used in the program (English is critical)
  • The content of the curriculum
  • The quality and diversity of the mentors
  • Whether the accelerator considers investing in startups
  • Remote vs. in-person format
  • Post-program support and the activity level of the alumni community

Conclusion

There are many types of accelerators, but it’s crucial to choose one that fits your business’s current situation and goals. I hope my experience can be helpful in some way!

Wishing everyone success in your startup journey!
